Well, over the years there’s been much controversy and discussion surrounding McDonalds food quality, the fattening of America and the like. I’m writing with a different point of view. I’m writing this because to me McDonalds has been a lifelong friend. To a kid who moved a lot seeing the golden arches was kind of close to being home.

I still remember the first times my Dad took me to a McDonalds. I was little and you drove through and you ate in the car. At the time, they were strictly a takeout place. He’d order me a happy meal and then order himself a couple of cheeseburgers and a large fry. He’d whip out his money clip and wad of cash, pay the smiling teller, and we’d go park and eat. I remember this so clearly. How rich I felt. How safe. How happy. Not many brands can claim to provide the kind of warmth and safety that I felt eating burgers in our car.

Now, it wasn’t always me and my dad. Mostly, it was the whole family and we’d have a special dinner night out (at my bequest) to my favorite restaurant with the golden arches. I was heartbroken, at first, when they built the restaurant inside and for awhile even though we could go inside, I made everyone eat in the car. Eventually, I got over my resistance to entering the establishment and we became inside eaters as well as the fast food grab and run type.

As I got older, McDonalds was there for me. Whether traveling internationally, or celebrating life’s happy moments or on occasion helping me to wipe away the tears. Nothing takes heartbreak away like a cheeseburger and fries. Before prom, I snuck out to calm my nerves with my arched friend. When I got all A’s on my report card - something that I was really proud of - I’d treat myself to a cheeseburger. When I was mad at friends, relatives or the world, McDonalds would always welcome me with open arms. You get the picture, McDonalds is a lot more than a hamburger joint to me.

Well, my dad’s older now, retired and I was wondering what to get him for father’s day, when it came to me. I’m getting him a money clip filled with gift certificates from McDonalds. I love you Dad. Thank you McDonalds.

Vinegar is not that expensive and can be used for many things in your yard. Vinegar makes a great weed killer; especially for weeds/grass between cracks in your sidewalk or in your flower bed. Vinegar may also kill your grass so you have to be a bit careful when putting on the lawn. Vinegar keeps ants and cats away so acts as a good animal deterrent due to the smell. Vinegar makes a great cleaner and disinfectant and vinegar will keep your fresh cut flowers around longer – just add a bit of vinegar to the vase.

Most avid gardeners have a surplus of seeds, reach out to a few folks in your neighborhood and see if you could seed share. There are more than enough seeds in a pack for multiple families – unless you have a huge growing area. Nothing tastes better than fresh spices in food. Rather than buy expensive spices, start a spice pot with some of the easier to grow spices. Basil, sage and oregano are all used fairly often and grow pretty easily given sun and water. Cilantro is a bit harder because it needs to be in ground vs a pot but if you have the space, cilantro is amazing fresh.

The cost of fresh organic vegetables is ever so expensive. If you can buy seeds or even little plants and grow your own vegetables you will save money over the long run. You may need to buy some animal repellant because once you get great looking vegetables, you will find you are a popular house among squirrel and duck alike. I lost some pumpkins to ducks and I lost my tomatoes to squirrels last year. I finally bought a container of repels all and so far it’s repelling all.

Under tree’s, along the sides of bushes, in some garden beds, it may be more cost effective to plant ground cover than to continue to put Mulch out season after season. Mulch may not be that expensive in and of itself but paying someone to put the mulch down certainly gets to be expensive. There are multiple types of groundcover some preferring shade to sun and vice versa. There are ground covers that flower and ground covers that stay close to the ground or provide a few feet of lift. Find an inexpensive ground cover you like and forget about having the mulch. To save even more money, you can often get snippets of ground cover from a neighbor’s or friends yard with permission of course.

For those of you new to gardening a perennial is a plant that comes back year after year. If you can landscape most of your yard with perennials then you won’t have to buy new plants every year. Did you know that many counties have free multch, dirt, sand and maybe rock for use in landscaping. It helps them for you to haul it away so they give it away. It also helps the county for you to upkeep your land. Research what is available in your county prior to spending lots of money on dirt. If the county doesn’t give it away, check with cement shops, rock shops and other raw material suppliers that may have excess or non-perfect stuff that they need to find a way to remove.

If you water outside lots, see about getting a separate sprinkler system for outside water usage. You do not want to pay sewer fees on the water you are using for your lawn/plants. Try cutting your own grass. If you have a relatively small yard, it probably will save you money to cut your own grass. If you do use chemicals on your yard, assess the size of your yard. If it’s pretty small this may be a task you want to take over. Once you know what fertilizer and weed killers work on your yard, watering it in or dry dropping it is not that difficult and you may find that you like being outside. It’s also nice for your kids to see you doing work vs hiring someone to do it. Use something pretty easy to help teach them work ethic. Of course, later you may want to teach them the value of outsourcing, but work ethic is important.
