It’s early in the morning. It’s cold - which is good because you want to get your gas during the coolest part of the day. You’re not looking at your gas tank, you’re in a daze and looking at the numbers spinning on the pump. You owe $20, $22, $25, $28 you see the dollars growing steadily and then here the familiar “click”, but you are 33 cents away from $29 dollars. So, you squeeze. You get just a little bit more gas in. This is a common but big mistake. Don’t fill your tank to the absolute top. Don’t risk spilling that little bit extra you just put in. Let your gas have room to breathe.

You’re at an intersection. You catch the eye of the car beside you. The light is red. You both look each other in the eye. Who’s car is faster? Who will be the first out of the gate? Who will be the first through the light? NOT YOU. Lose the race and save your cash. Those quick starts cost you money.

You may love the feel of the wind in your hair and the sun on your skin, but if you want to keep your cash in your pocket save it for the beach or the park and drive with your sunroof closed and your window’s up.  The drag that open windows (including your sunroof) put on your car force you to consume extra fuel.   Be mindful that you are actually paying extra to enjoy the feel of the fresh summer day.

Remember when you were in high school and thought it pretty cool to “Rev” your engine?  It may have been cool, but it certainly wasn’t cost effective.  Save the cents and stop the “revving”.

Many of you turn your car off rather than let it idle. You do this because you think it may be better for the car or perhaps because you don't want to waste gas...However, Turning your car off and on actually requires more fuel than idling and it puts more wear and tear on the car. You can actually spend an entire minute in idle and use less gas than if you were to turn your car off and back on again.

Bottom line: Idling is better for short waits.

Everyone thinks that you need to warm up the car before you drive it.  Cars were meant to be driven not warmed.  If you can get past the old wives tale of car warming and start driving you car after only 30 seconds of warm up time, you’ll save yourself money and time.  You may need to warm up to the day, but your car…Not so much.

Don’t get me wrong, having a brand new car is fantastic and everyone should at least think seriously about it once in a lifetime.  However, if you really want to focus on saving money buying new is probably not the smartest thing to do.  A good used car that you keep a long time is a better deal than the shiny new toy.  I’ll admit it though, most of the cars that I’ve bought have been new.  To each his own.

Many people know this and purchase discount tires, but what they don’t do is check and see how old the tire they are buying is.  If you look on the inside of the tire there should be a series of numbers that include a manufactured date.  If you can’t find it, someone in sales should be able to help you.  It’s important to purchase recently manufactured tires and not tires that are too old.  Old tires get brittle and can pop.  So, be safe and save money with new discount tires.

Rather than run to the store multiple times or go out to the grocery store and then to the post office or go from one side of town to the other, plan our your day and your errand routes.  this will not only save you money (less gas), it will save you something even more valuable.  Time.  You can then spend your extra time counting those extra pennies.

Don’t be a packaholic.   The less you keep in your car, the lighter it will be.  The lighter your car, the longer your gas will last.  The longer the gas lasts the more more money you save.  So, lighten the load.  Of course, losing that last extra 10 lbs couldn’t hurt either.

OK, here’s a little one that most of us never think of.  Make sure that your gas cap is on tight.  Gas evaporates.  If you want to get the most for your money make sure that your gas cap is on tight with a good seal, otherwise you are evaporating money away.

You heard me, when you go to a service station for your regular 6 month/5K miles inspection, ask them if they could wash the car too and return it looking as new as possible.  They won’t detail your car, but many of them will give it a good rinsing off for you.  Save you a bit of time and it will save you a bit of money.  Since you are already there it doesn’t really take you much longer if any longer.

Yes, you got it.  Fill your tank up in the  morning.  Gas is compressed in the cold weather, normally it’s colder in the morning.  So, you get more for your money.  Maybe it’s an old wives tale, but I live by it.  Also, if you go early enough, there are no lines.  Save time and money.

You buy a new car. You think I need to treat her right. You put the best of best gas in your car.  Guess what.  You’re car doesn’t need it.  Today cars are built so well that they run pretty good on regular fuel.  Save the extra dollars – this adds up significantly over time.  If you don’t believe me ask your mechanic.

Not necessarily intuitive, but if you live in an area that is deemed “high risk” by insurance companies (you know who you are), you may want to apply for private insurance first.  You may not only get covered, but you may get covered at a better rate.  Good luck.

Now, I’m not 100% sure that all companies use this and I’m hoping that I get some that may be in the industry to respond to this post.  But,  so many large purchases involve a quick look into your credit that I wouldn’t be surprised it insurance companies (who have cost effective access to the data readily available) take a peek.  If this is the case, then it’s not hard to extrapolate that the better your score the better your rate.  so, if you can hold off renegotiating till your score improves it may save you some cash in the long run.

You shouldn’t have to pay to check your credit score though there are lots and lots of credit checking serives that not only charge you but they opt you into a recurring monthly fee (beware).  This is one monthly fee that you may not need.  All three credit companies:  equifax, experian, can’ think of third at the moment, are required by law to give consumers a copy of their credit reports for FREE.  Not FREE if you subscribe to a monthly monitoring service.  Now, it may take a while to navigate the phone system or internet site, but if you are willing to order your report and get it in the mail vs. online then your report is 100% free.

One way to reduce premiums is to try to find an affinity group that you can become part of that offers insurance discounts to their members.  Look into college groups and other organizations that you may be part of now or were part of at one time in your life.  Military discounts, senior discounts AARP rates, Alumni group discounts, small business association discounts.  Be clever and you could reduce your monthly premiums.

Be a safety girl! Be a safety Boy!  Safe means more money in your pocket.  If you have deadbolts, alarm systems, CO2 monitors, sprinklers and the like installed in your house (of course, if you do the installations, you would save money vs. hiring a specialist), you become eligible for safe home discounts.  Ask first what you need to do to qualify.
