OK, here’s a little one that most of us never think of. Make sure that your gas cap is on tight. Gas evaporates. If you want to get the most for your money make sure that your gas cap is on tight with a good seal, otherwise you are evaporating money away.

You heard me, when you go to a service station for your regular 6 month/5K miles inspection, ask them if they could wash the car too and return it looking as new as possible. They won’t detail your car, but many of them will give it a good rinsing off for you. Save you a bit of time and it will save you a bit of money. Since you are already there it doesn’t really take you much longer if any longer.

Yes, you got it. Fill your tank up in the morning. Gas is compressed in the cold weather, normally it’s colder in the morning. So, you get more for your money. Maybe it’s an old wives tale, but I live by it. Also, if you go early enough, there are no lines. Save time and money.

You buy a new car. You think I need to treat her right. You put the best of best gas in your car. Guess what. You’re car doesn’t need it. Today cars are built so well that they run pretty good on regular fuel. Save the extra dollars – this adds up significantly over time. If you don’t believe me ask your mechanic.

Not necessarily intuitive, but if you live in an area that is deemed “high risk” by insurance companies (you know who you are), you may want to apply for private insurance first. You may not only get covered, but you may get covered at a better rate. Good luck.

Now, I’m not 100% sure that all companies use this and I’m hoping that I get some that may be in the industry to respond to this post. But, so many large purchases involve a quick look into your credit that I wouldn’t be surprised it insurance companies (who have cost effective access to the data readily available) take a peek. If this is the case, then it’s not hard to extrapolate that the better your score the better your rate. so, if you can hold off renegotiating till your score improves it may save you some cash in the long run.
You shouldn’t have to pay to check your credit score though there are lots and lots of credit checking serives that not only charge you but they opt you into a recurring monthly fee (beware). This is one monthly fee that you may not need. All three credit companies: equifax, experian, can’ think of third at the moment, are required by law to give consumers a copy of their credit reports for FREE. Not FREE if you subscribe to a monthly monitoring service. Now, it may take a while to navigate the phone system or internet site, but if you are willing to order your report and get it in the mail vs. online then your report is 100% free.

One way to reduce premiums is to try to find an affinity group that you can become part of that offers insurance discounts to their members. Look into college groups and other organizations that you may be part of now or were part of at one time in your life. Military discounts, senior discounts AARP rates, Alumni group discounts, small business association discounts. Be clever and you could reduce your monthly premiums.

Be a safety girl! Be a safety Boy! Safe means more money in your pocket. If you have deadbolts, alarm systems, CO2 monitors, sprinklers and the like installed in your house (of course, if you do the installations, you would save money vs. hiring a specialist), you become eligible for safe home discounts. Ask first what you need to do to qualify.

For those of you that work at home or carpool or take public transportation, you may be eligible for a Low Mileage discount on your automobile insurance. Ask your agent how many miles a year you need to qualify for this. You may find that carpooling a few days a week will save you big time on your insurance. It never hurts to ask and the environmental upside is a win too.

Many people use the amount they paid for their house as the amount of insurance coverage they need to insure their home. However, do you really need to insure the land that came with the house? It probably isn’t going to be damaged much in fire, or storms…Bottom line, just insure the home that you would need to replace not the ground that it came on. This should save you nicely.

Yep, you guessed it. Lots of fires are caused by cigarettes so if you stop smoking, your insurance rates will go down. Oh yeah, you may find some health benefits and you’ll be saving by not purchasing cigarettes. So, it’s a win all the way around. However, it’s a hard habit to break. Good luck to you my friends.

It takes a bit longer but in the long run it will save you money. Rather than go with the first company that you stumble upon, make a list of the top companies that you would want to work with and then ask for quotes from all of them letting each know that you are putting your business up for bid. You may find that you get some pretty good rates back. Good luck and happy hunting.

Make sure that you are getting all the discounts you are entitled to on your insurance. If you’ve never had a ticket or accident, you probably qualify for a safe driver discount. If you have sprinklers in your home, you may qualify for home discount. Same is true if you have an alarm system in your house. Understand what discounts are available (ask your agent) and make sure that you receive everything you qualify for.

Something that is pretty easy to do and will save you money long term. Keep your home, auto, personal liability and other coverages that are applicable with one carrier. It will save you time. It will give you sole contact person to work with. It most likely will provide you a multi-coverage discount with the carrier. It sure wouldn’t hurt to ask.

If you're deductible is high (which it should be -- see Money Clip Tip 1) then you should not be making claims for small items. When you make many claims, it drives your insurance rates up over time. Only make claims when you need to for big items like your roof, or your water furnace. Sweat the small stuff yourself.
