As with anything that seems to good to be true, this one probably is. It is likely possible that the 0% is an introductory rate. After the first three months of 0%, the interest rate will likely go up and likely go up very high. After enjoying the first month’s interest free, you may find yourself owing a lot of interest charges for balances that you did not pay off due to the 0% rate. Make sure you read the fine print to see what your interest rate will adjust to after the initial period is over.

Each credit card has a limit to the money that they will allow you to spend. Don’t go over the limit. If you go over the limit, there are charges involved that you don’t want to pay. Your credit limit should be on each of your statements somewhere towards the top. As you pay your bills on time and show the company that you are a good credit risk, your credit limit will go up. Know what your credit limit is and make sure that you are able to stay well under it.

I think that it’s helpful to know your credit score so that when you are applying for any type of credit you will be armed prior with the knowledge that they already know about you. You can get your credit score free from any of the three credit bureaus. The free version is by mail. If you want to pay, which I do not suggest, you can purchase immediately online.

  • Equifax 1-800-685-1111 This one lets you get a free report if you have been denied credit in the last 60 days. Option 2. Make sure that you order only the credit report. Mail within 48 hours.
  • TransUnion - 800-916-8800 - mail within 6 to 8 business days.
  • Experian - 888-397-3742 - receive within 8 to 10 business days.

Once you are armed with your credit score, you will know if you are a good or bad credit risk. If you are a good credit risk, you should be able to pay very low rates. If you are a bad credit risk, check to see if the credit records are correct. If so, work to get your score up prior to taking on debt.
